Uzi Parnes is a filmmaker and photographer. Most recently, he has shown THE SILENCE OF MARCEL DUCHAMP a live film collaboration with Ela Troyano at The Berlin Film Festival in February 2010. His work was part of LIVE FILM BERLIN in October 2009 where he performed I SHOT JACK, TWO with Ela Troyano and premiered the slide show I SHOT JACK SMITH and the video COCKTAILS WITH JACK AND the installation ALLIUM CHANDALIER.
Uzi has been part of New York's art and performance scene for over 25 years. He has been photographing the performers and architectural ruins of downtown New York since 1980. He has also collaborated with Carmelita Tropicana Co-Writing and Directing four plays including Memories of the Revolution, Carnaval, and The Conquest of Mexico as Seen Through the Eyes of Hernando Cortez's Horse produced at PS122, DTW and WOW Cafe. All of these included his photographic work as part of the multi-media performance. He also directed and performed in Tropicana's Chicas 2000 and Clamcracker Suite.
Uzi has also written and directed numerous short films and videos shown extensively in international film festivals, Anthology Film Archives, MOMA and PBS. He also has an impressive body of work as a photographer and spent many years working with Jack Smith and shooting countless photos of Jack from 1982-1989. He was the founder and co-director with Ela Troyano of the 1980's performance club Chandalier. Worked as Line-Producer on Rosa Von Praunheim's 1995 ground- breaking documentary Transsexual Menace and as a videographer for Gay Cable Network.
From 2003 to 2005 Uzi ran the Uzi N.Y. Gallery, in the East Village, showcasing the work of local photographers and painters.
Uzi has also worked as an actor in film and television and has had small roles opposite Al Pacino and Michael Keaton. Downtown, he has created original roles in the theater of Ethyl Eichelberger, Holly Hughes, Michael Kirby, Kestutis Nakas, William Niederkorn as well as Jack Smith. He is featured in Mary Jordan's documentary on Jack Smith and the Destruction of Atlantis.
Uzi's photos and photo-constructions/photo-chandaliers (sic) have been shown in numerous group shows and exhibitions.
Uzi has a Ph.D. in Performance Studies and M.A. in Drama from New York University.
